Good Hockey Calls For Media Frenzy?

What a game last night between the Caps and Flyers.  A combined seven goals in the 2nd period, two from Alex Ovechkin and three from Brad Richards, also including a NHL-record four assists in that same period by a defenseman, Matt Carle.  This isn’t what was exciting me during last night’s broadcast, however.  It was the ridiculous amount of predictions in-between periods and in the news this morning.  This person will score this many goals, this team is in the top four in their conference, these guys are going to be in contention for the Cup.  Here’s a newsflash for you…IT’S THREE GAMES INTO THE SEASON!!

There’s been some great games so far this season, but I think the guys from “Strange Brew” could do a better job predicting the future of the 2009-10 NHL Season.

Video of the Day: Fight Night

The Anaheim Ducks surprised the hockey world last night after knocking off the first seed–and biggest choke artists of the 2009 Playoffs–San Jose Sharks.  Joe Thornton and Ryan Getzlaf had a tussle right off the faceoff after a Ducks goal as Big Joe tried to give his team a little boost to stay alive in the series.

According to hockeyfights.com 80% of viewers believed Thornton won the fight.  There could have been a couple other fights that might of ensued if not for the “1 fight at a time rule”.

Around The League: East Coast Style 4-8-09

  • The Rangers want to be in the playoffs. They defeated the Habs last night 3-1. They have to win at least one of their remaining two games against Philly to be sure of a spot.

  • Carolina is really good and has matched a franchise best with their 9th straight win.

  • Marty Brodeur and the Devils did not look very impressive last night, losing to the determined to be a relevant hockey team, but out of the playoff picture Maple Leafs.

  • In that same category of “determined to be a relevant hockey team, but still out of the playoff picture”, The Ottawa Senators beat the Bruins. Keep in mind the Bruins are still battling for the President’s Trophy.

  • There aren’t any important games tonight in terms of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Buffalo is all but done, with six points less than the 8th place Rangers, and you already know how I feel about Toronto.

Around the League: While I Was Out

  • Alex Ovechkin scored his 50th goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday and added 2 assists.  He becomes only the 3rd player in NHL history to break 50 goals 3 times in their first 4 seasons (Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy).  The history isn’t what’s being talked about, it’s OV’s celebration.  A lot of people are backing him up like Jeremy Roenick and Sidney Crosby, but some disagree.  I think its a good thing for hockey.  I think Ovechkin is good for hockey.  As long as a celebration doesn’t taunt another player or disrespect someone directly I don’t see a problem with it.

“You know what? I love Ovechkin. I think this kid is great, he’s great for the game, he’s great for the young kids to watch. The energy this kid shows, the talent he shows, what he does on the ice is just spectacular, and, you know, so what? He goes and puts his stick down and, you know, he is hot. He is hot. He’s telling everybody that he’s red hot, and his stick is hot, he’s letting everybody in the world know that he knows that he’s good and that he’s hot.”–Roenick

“He’s been probably criticized a bit about it,” said Crosby.  “He’s showing that passion, and that’s fine.”–Crosby

Jeff Marek claims the celly isn’t orignial and that its worse than what Sean Avery said about the Flames captain–CBCsports

Even Ovechkin’s former captain Jeff Halpern didn’t like the celly, and feels something needs to be taken care of.

“I don’t mind the spontaneous celebrations, but that kind of stuff is … I don’t even know the word for it,” said Halpern. “It’s up to our team to do something about it.”
