After opening the season with a commanding win over the Boston Bruins, Washington will host Toronto tonight in their home-opener.
In a highly anticipated season opener with a couple of the NHL’s top teams competing for their first win in the season, the Caps were the team that stood out. Four players (Ovechkin, Backstrom, Laich, Semin) had multi-point games as Jose Theodore stood solid in the Caps’ Crease.
Brooks Laich scored the first goal of the season and showed he will be a stand-out player for the Caps this season. His awareness in front of the net, especially on the powerplay, will surely secure his 3rd straight 20-goal season.
As for the Capitals’ superstar, Ovechkin was anything less than what is expected of him day-in and day-out. He scored two goals, added a powerplay assist, and threw his body around cleaning out anyone in his path. According to The Hockey News, the Bruins blocked eight shots by Ovie but he still managed to get five on net. It’s safe to say you can TRY to stop him from shooting, but Ovechkin will still find a way.
