Caps Beat Thrashers 4-2

The Caps had only one powerplay Tuesday and stopped six Atlanta powerplays with help from rookie goaltender Simeon Varlamov.

With playoffs right around the corner, the Caps are getting some production from some key players.  Tomas Fleischmann is finally stepping up after getting a lucky bounce for his second goal in two games since his scoreless drought starting on March 1st.

Rookie Simeon Varlamov was spectacular in his fourth win as a Washington Capital.  He stopped a total of 29 shots last night, and definitely made an impression on the Capitals coaching staff for backup in the playoffs.  Veteran Sergei Fedorov was also impressed by his fellow country-man’s performance.

“I think he stood on his head,” Sergei Fedorov said to the Post. “It’s not easy to make those saves. He saved our [butts].”

The Caps aren’t necessarily playing playoff-like hockey, but it could be due to their weak schedule.  They often like to “play down” to the level of their opponents but the important thing is they are winning games.  They now have a comfortable 4 point lead over the Devils for 2nd place in the Eastern Conference with only 2 games to go for each squad.

Alex Ovechkin had two assists last night to keep him only two points behind Evgeni Malkin for the league-lead in points.  Both players have only two games remaining in the season to try and lock their votes for the Hart Trophy.

3 Stars:
