Caps Fall to Leafs in Shootout 3-2

After the Caps tied the game up with under a minute to go, Curtis Joseph replaced Martin Gerber and shutout Washington for the win

Curtis Joseph is 5th all-time in minutes played by a goalie with almost 54 thousand minutes, but he only needed six to shutout the Caps last night.

Cujo came into the game after Martin Gerber was kicked out for bumping into an official.  The Caps’ Brooks Laich stuffed the puck in for the game-tying goal, which set Gerber off.  He started yelling at the official, and bumped into him as if it were an argument between a baseball manager and an umpire.  Gerber will be suspended for three games.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 51st goal of the season when he blew down the right side and received a pass from Nicklas Backstrom.  He cut across the net and put the puck behind Gerber to tie the game at one a piece.

The Leafs struck late in the 3rd period to take a 2-1 lead, but the Caps battled right back with Laich’sgoal.  With 12 seconds to go, Ovie received a cross-ice one-timer but Cujo slid over to send the game into overtime.

The Caps dominated the overtime stanza out-shooting Toronto 8-0.  Cujo stood on his head, and managed to keep the puck out of the Leafs’ net.  The Capitals even had a powerplay with a minute to go and peppered the Leafs’ goaltender.

Jeffrey Hamilton was the only player to score in the shootout.  Ovie was the last shooter for the Caps but was stuffed by Joseph to give Toronto their 4th win in five games.

The Caps will be facing some pretty hot teams looking for a playoff spot in their next couple games–besides the Islanders.  But it’s safe to say every game for the rest of the season is going to be a battle.

3 Stars:

** Mike Green **
