Too Little, Too Late

Caps lose in a low scoring affair 2-1Maple Leafs Hurricanes Hockey

The Washington Capitals lost their 3rd home game in a row last night against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.  It’s safe to say they’re in a little bit of a stint right now.  This is the first time the Caps have lost 3 strait games under coach Bruce Boudreau, and he was furious in the 3rd period during a timeout.  Alex Ovechkin sat out for the game with a bruised foot, and losing the leading scorer in the NHL didn’t help Washington’s offense.

The first 2 periods were scoreless, but the Caps got a scare when Jason Blake drove to the net and took out Jose Theodore –who is still ailing with the flu–for a tap in for the Leafs.  The goal was reviewed and called off to keep the score tied up.  It stayed that way going into the 3rd period, but the boys in red outshot Toronto 24-17 in the first 2.

The powerplay seemed lost without their star player in the lineup going 0-4.  Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Semin both took penalties 4 seconds into 2 different powerplay chances.  Tomas Fleischmann also had multiple opportunities to burry the puck but failed to do so.  He has only 2 points (1g,1a) in his last 8 games, but in his defense Martin Gerber played an excellent game in his debut with Toronto.

The Leafs got a lucky goal 6 minutes into the 3rd period from behind the net.  Theodore was maybe a little out of position, so Lee Stempniak just threw the puck at the net, and it went in off Theo’s pad and in.  They struck again 3 minutes later to pull ahead 2-0.  Kubina got a nice feed at the point to blast it past Theodore, and of course Blake was in front of the net once again making slight contact with the Cap’s netminder.  However, the goal was allowed, and it was a good call but it definetly threw Theodore off.

Bruce Boudreau called a timeout and was yelling at the bench with fury.  They tried to make a comeback as Semin tied the game up with an empty net behind him and under a minute to play.  It was too little, too late.  The Caps heard boos from the stands, but hope to get back on track this Sunday against the Penguins.
